Wearing Glasses or Contacts during COVID-19
How Does COVID-19 Affect Me Wearing Glasses or Contacts?
Eyeglasses need to be disinfected. You can wash your eyeglasses with a very mild detergent like Dawn and wash with lukewarm to cool water for 20 seconds. Dry with a very soft, microfiber cloth. You can also use an electronic jewelry cleaner and follow the instructions from the manufacturer.
- Do Not Use hot water or you’ll risk warping the frame and possibly deteriorate your lens coating.
- Do Not Use paper towels to dry your glasses or you’ll scratch the frame and lenses.
- Do Not Use an abrasive cleaner or cloth or alcohol-based products. Most likely, your glasses have a coating on the lenses and you do not want to deteriorate your coating by having it peel or scratch your lenses and frame.
Contact lens wearers need to wash your hands, again according to CDC guidelines at , before insertion or removal. If you wear daily disposables, dispose of your contact lenses daily before going to bed. Wearers of monthly or two-week lenses should disinfect your lenses according to manufacturer and eye care professional guidelines. Your contact lens solution box or instruction pamphlet should have instructions on how to clean and disinfect your contact lenses.
Stop wearing your contacts if sick.
Consult your eye care provider if you have questions or concerns about wearing your contact lenses or glasses during this time.
Remember we are all in this together, apart.
Stay safe and protect yourselves.
